ONE Statement on the Passing of Congressman Payne
Washington, D.C. — Sheila Nix, U.S. Executive Director of The ONE Campaign, today issued the following statement regarding the passion of Congressman Donald Milford Payne (NJ-10).
“We are deeply saddened to learn that Congressman Donald Payne lost his battle with colon cancer on Tuesday. We have lost a loyal champion for Africa and ONE has lost a close friend and voice for the world’s poorest people.
“Congressman Payne never failed to ask “What about Africa,” no matter what was happening in Congress. And beyond simply voicing his concerns amongst colleagues, he reliably and effectively put words into action. Congressman Payne helped push through legislation that helped end the war in Sudan and stop the genocide in Darfur. He was one of the lead authors on the 2008 bill to renew PEPFAR, which is now providing HIV treatment for nearly 4 million people around the world.
“Congressman Payne fought for debt relief and promoted trade with African countries. His passion for widespread access to education has helped to put millions of African children into school for the very first time and his championing efforts for safer drinking water throughout Africa has made a lasting impact for millions on the continent. He has left a life-saving legacy behind and for that, we are eternally grateful. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Payne family during this time.”
