ONE Reacts to President Obama’s World AIDS Day Remarks

WASHINGTON (December 2, 2013) Following President Obama’s remarks today marking World AIDS Day, Tom Hart, US Executive Director of The ONE Campaign said:

“We applaud the Obama administration for meeting – and exceeding – the target of 6 million people on HIV/AIDS treatment that the president set on World AIDS day two years ago at an event the ONE Campaign was proud to host. We are also delighted the President made clear his commitment to match on a 1-to-2 basis all contributions to the Global Fund over the next three years, up to $5 billion.

President Obama acknowledged that the next order of business will be to work with global partners to set new targets for treatment and prevention, including for PEPFAR, and to appoint a new Global AIDS Coordinator to lead US efforts.

We look forward to working with the administration to ensure these targets are bold and drive this disease into the history books.

Even in these bitterly partisan times, PEPFAR continues to earn support from both sides of the aisle. President Bush deserves credit for launching this historic, life-saving program and we are grateful that President Obama has supported it and expanded its reach.”
