ONE Welcomes Nomination of Dr. Deborah Birx as US Global AIDS Coordinator

WASHINGTON (January 10, 2014) – The ONE Campaign applauds the nomination of Dr. Deborah Birx to serve as US Global AIDS Coordinator, a position that leads America’s life-saving PEPFAR program and oversees its important partnership with The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria.

Tom Hart, ONE’s US Executive Director, said:

“We are delighted that President Obama has nominated Dr. Birx to fill this extremely important role. Her three decades of experience in the fight against HIV/AIDS and infectious diseases will be extremely valuable as the US charts a continuing course to lead global efforts to achieve an AIDS-free generation.

We urge Congress and the White House to work together to ensure a swift confirmation process. With the global AIDS fight at a critical tipping point, there is no time to lose.

Once confirmed, we look forward to working with Dr. Birx to develop bold new, outcome-oriented PEPFAR targets that strengthen support for the program and drive accelerated progress towards the beginning of the end of AIDS.”
