ONE Campaign Breaks 100,000 MySpace Friends
Washington, DC – ONE: The Campaign to Make Poverty History broke over 100,000 friends on its MySpace page this week. Danny Castro of San Diego created the page on May 10, 2005, and two years later it’s one of the most popular groups on MySpace.com.
“Danny has donated time and attention to promoting and developing ONE’s MySpace page that the campaign could never do on its own,” Josh Peck, Internet Director for the ONE Campaign, said. “It’s exactly this kind of special skill set that ONE members bring to the campaign that makes what we’re doing so new and different. Our grassroots supporters are the strength behind the ONE Campaign’s efforts to ask America’s leaders to do more for those that need it most, and they are the strength behind ONE’s prominence online.”
“Encouraging people to visit ONE.org, learn more about the Campaign and get involved is something that just seemed natural to me after I knew what ONE was doing,” Danny Castro, owner of the ONE MySpace site, said. “It’s been a great experience for me. ONE supporters rallied behind the cause, really got the word out, and together we’ve built an extremely successful site working for a cause I believe in. I’ve also had some fun opportunities as a result.” Danny was contacted through the site by Maroon 5 and other bands.
“Danny created a MySpace presence for ONE that dwarfs that of other campaigns and organizations,” Kimberly Cadena, ONE Campaign spokesperson, said. “He’s grown the group into an active, aware grassroots network that is able to transform its online presence into real world action, which is the definition of success for an advocacy campaign like ONE.”
Danny Castro volunteers his time to run the ONE Campaign’s primary MySpace group, dedicating at least two hours a day to its promotion, maintenance and development. He estimates he’s spent about 1,200 hours working on the site, giving it exceptional care and attention, including sending a personal welcome message to each individual that joins the group.
Danny started the MySpace page two years ago after becoming a fan of U2 and hearing about the ONE Campaign, which U2’s Bono co-founded. Danny is also a member of Long Live Logos, a pop rock band that he describes as a mix between The Killers and Todd Rundgren. His band’s MySpace site can be found at http://www.myspace.com/longlivelogos.
