This year around the world, activists have stepped up to do their part to make the world a better, safer place for everyone, no matter where they’re from. Now, after a long year and tireless work from activists, it’s time to start preparing for the year ahead. Whether you’re a seasoned activist or if you’re just beginning your activism journey, it’s time to start thinking about how to affect change in 2021.
Here are six resolutions for activists to consider in 2021.
Ask world leaders to step up
If 2020 has shown us anything, it’s that a global pandemic requires a global response from leaders around the world. Right now, we need leaders to step up and take action to create a safe and equitable outcome to COVID-19. As an activist, you can do your part in 2021 by signing our petition asking world leaders to end COVID-19 everywhere so we can live in a COVID-free world. We’ve also outlined 10 things we need to see from leaders.
Volunteer your time
Volunteers are vital to the work that organizations like ONE and other nonprofits do, and volunteering is a great way to further your work as an activist or to get started on your activism journey. That’s why deciding to dedicate your time in the new year is a great resolution. If you’re looking for volunteer opportunities to pursue in 2021, discover ONE’s volunteer options.
Brush up on your vaccine knowledge
This past year, we’ve heard a lot about vaccines. That’s why taking the time to educate yourself on vaccines and staying up to date on the latest vaccine news is a great resolution for 2021, especially during COVID-19. To start your vaccine education, check out the answers to some of your most Googled questions about vaccines, learn more about our Vaccine Access Test, and sign ONE’s petition to ensure that pharmaceutical companies are doing their part to help end COVID-19 with global vaccine access.
Educate yourself on debt
Another thing we’ve heard a lot about in 2020 is debt. The onset of the pandemic has resulted in a number of world leaders having to make the impossible choice between using already limited resources to fight the pandemic or pay off debts. In 2021, brushing up on your knowledge of debt and how it’s affecting countries and people around the world is a good way to kick-start your activism journey in the new year. Luckily, we’ve done some of the leg work for you — read more about debt and COVID-19, and add your name to our petition asking world leaders to suspend debt repayments at least through the new year.
Explore how COVID-19 is impacting Africa
The pandemic has affected people all around the world. To shed some light on the impacts of COVID-19 in Africa, we launched our Africa Tracker earlier this year. Our tracker has the most up to date data from universities, governments, and global institutions to explore how the pandemic is affecting African countries. Explore the data by country, sector, and across the continent, and to get the latest information sent right to you by signing up for our weekly Aftershocks newsletter.
Work to end extreme poverty
Even before the pandemic, poverty affected millions of people around the world. Now, COVID-19 is exacerbating it. That’s why going into the new year, further your activism or start your work and join us in the fight to end extreme poverty so everyone, everywhere can live a life of dignity and opportunity.
