ONE welcomes the nomination of Jutta Urpilainen as Commissioner for International Partnerships
Brussels, 10 September 2019 – On behalf of its 2 million members in Europe, ONE welcomes the nomination of Jutta Urpilainen as Commissioner for International Partnerships.
Emily Wigens, Director of ONE’s European election campaign, said:
“Jutta Urpilainen’s nomination comes at a crucial time as the EU considers the future of its relationship with Africa. Her nomination to the International Partnerships portfolio reflects President Ursula Von der Leyen’s vision for EU development cooperation: going beyond traditional development strategies and strengthening cooperation between Europe and its neighbours.
Jutta Urpilainen recognises the importance of the future relationship between Africa and Europe and the need for a genuine strategic partnership between the two continents that harnesses the potential of Africa’s growing youth population. We look forward to hearing the Commissioner-designate’s ideas for turning words into action and implementing a renewed Africa-Europe partnership based on shared values and an equal footing, underpinned by ambitious aid investments, and serving the best interest of Africans and Europeans.”
