ONE welcomes the election of Ursula von der Leyen as President of the European Commission
Brussels – On behalf of its 2 million members in Europe, ONE welcomes the election of Ursula von der Leyen as President of the European Commission.
Friederike Röder, EU and France Director at ONE, said:
“As the world’s biggest development donor, the European Union plays a vital role in making it easier for the world’s poorest to lift themselves out of poverty. We are delighted that President von der Leyen has been elected as president of the European Commission and we hope she will commit to accomplishing the vision of the Sustainable Development Goals and achieving a world where no one is left behind.
With the necessary financial resources and policy commitments, eliminating extreme poverty by 2030 is possible, but only with the political will of European decision-makers. We are therefore encouraged that 155 new Members of the European Parliament have already committed to help put an end to extreme poverty. We look forward to working with the President and the Commission’s new intake to turn commitments into concrete action, starting with adopting a long-term EU aid budget that is fit for the future.”
