ONE responds to the UK’s historic achievement of reaching 0.7% international aid target
Adrian Lovett, Europe Executive Director for the ONE campaign said:
“Over the last twenty years we’ve met people up and down the United Kingdom passionately campaigning to see this day come – a day when they could finally say: “we did it”. The British people can be hugely proud that, even when things are tough at home, we have kept our promise to the poorest people in the world. It’s not about the money itself – it’s about the difference it can make. A child is vaccinated every two seconds because of British aid – that’s 1.4 million lives saved over four years.
“In meeting this 43-year old commitment, the Chancellor has recognised that this not just the right thing for the world – it is the right thing for Britain. An investment in international development is an investment in our own future too. We wouldn’t have got here today without the commitment of the last three Prime Ministers and their governments. Today’s news brings closer the day when we can end extreme poverty for good. ONE and the IF campaign will continue to work to ensure these promises are kept.”
