ONE responds to Prime Minister’s push for world vaccination by end of 2022
Today, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced his ambition that G7 leaders rally behind a global effort to “vaccinate the world” by the end of 2022, with reports in the Sunday Times that the UK will give 100 million doses to the world’s poorest countries.
Lis Wallace, Head of UK Advocacy, said: “Just days out from hosting the G7 summit, this hints at much needed global leadership from the Prime Minister. Reports that the UK will give 100 million doses to the world’s poorest countries builds on the plans announced back in February, providing important clarity on just how many doses we will share.
“The UK is on track to have a surplus of at least 130 million doses in 2021 alone. So now we need concrete details of the plan and a commitment that all of these doses will be shared as fast as possible, and no later than the end of this year.
“Also, we urge the Prime Minister to confirm that the value of these donated doses will be additional to an aid budget of 0.5% GNI. This can be a way back to maintaining the 0.7% commitment, if done right.”
