ONE responds to European Commission announcement of €3.5 billion for nutrition
Eloise Todd, Brussels director at ONE said: “This scale of investment could be truly transformational. The EU has been ahead of the game in recognising the strategic importance of tackling under-nutrition, but a €3.5 billion pledge shows a serious political commitment to get on with the job.”
“Transparency will be crucial to these investments; every cent should be tracked so we know exactly how much will end up being spent on basic nutrition and to ensure that the money goes where it’s most needed.”
“The announcement could hardly have been more timely; just yesterday the Lancet published shocking new statistics showing that under-nutrition is responsible for 600,000 more child deaths a year than previously thought. Other donors should follow the Commission’s lead and propose ambitious funding to tackle the scourge of under nutrition and stunting at this weekend’s international conference on nutrition in London.”
