ONE reacts to appointment of Anne-Marie Trevelyan as new Secretary of State for International Development
Today, as part of the Government reshuffle, Anne-Marie Trevelyan MP as the new Secretary of State for International Development. Anti-poverty organisation The ONE Campaign responded to the news that Ms Trevelyan will now be heading up the Department for International Development. Speaking about the news, Romilly Greenhill, UK Director of ONE, said:
“We look forward to working with Anne-Marie Trevelyan as the new Secretary of State for International Development. She arrives to a full inbox with some big issues demanding her full attention – starting immediately by making sure that the fight against preventable disease gets the vital funding it needs when the UK hosts the Gavi summit in June.
“Maintaining DFID’s status – as a separate department led by a Secretary of State – is the right thing to do. As the world’s pre-eminent development agency, DFID plays a vital role sustaining Britain’s global influence and ensuring we continue to lead the charge in the fight against extreme poverty, injustice and preventable disease. That leadership is needed now more than ever if we are going to rise to the big global challenges of the new decade.”
