ONE responds to joint GPE pledge announced at G7 Summit
G7 and EU leaders have agreed on a joint pledge of $2.75 billion ahead of the upcoming Global Partnership for Education (GPE) replenishment conference, far below the requested 70% ($3.5 billion) of the $5 billion ask.
Reacting to the announcement, Edwin Ikhuoria, ONE Africa’s Executive Director, said:
“$2.75 billion is a start, but G7 and EU leaders must go further. Having spent trillions in their own domestic COVID response, it’s deeply concerning that they couldn’t even fulfil the joint $3.5 billion ask to arrest the global learning crisis. Bolder and more ambitious pledges are urgently needed as the real race begins now, including from the UK as co-host of the replenishment.”
