Did you know that by the end of 2020, sub-Saharan region of Africa had up to 495 million mobile service subscribers? That’s 46% of the region’s population, and is an increase of almost 20 million from 2019.
And children under the age of 15, who account for 40% of the region’s population, are using mobile technology to connect with others and have conversations in real-time.
So how does this connect to our work? Well, we’re going mobile. ONE in Africa has launched it’s new online chatbot on WhatsApp and Facebook to interact with supporters on the go.

Why we’re launching a chatbot
At the end of 2020, Nigeria, Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire, Senegal, and Cameroon had the highest number of Facebook users in Africa. In fact, about 31.6 million users in Nigeria had a Facebook account.
Similarly, WhatsApp is the most popular instant messaging app in Africa. As of the fourth quarter of 2020, Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa are the leading countries of internet users who use WhatsApp monthly. Now, we’re tapping into that.
When we launched the Make Naija Stronger (MNS) campaign in 2019, we introduced the chatbot to our audiences for the first time. It was designed to encourage Nigeria’s young and upwardly mobile subscribers to take action on key social-economic issues that can transform their community positively through the apps they love. The pilot phase of the chatbot during the MNS campaign revealed one big thing to us: chatbots can help us reach more young people across the continent.
What we’ve learned is that more young people in Africa are spending a lot of time using Facebook and WhatsaApp to engage with others at an enormous scale. And that isn’t slowing down any time soon. We see this as an opportunity to show these young people the power they possess to create movements that will positively impact their communities and country, all while on social media.
Our new chatbot
As of March 2022, we’ve launched our newest chatbot. Accessible via WhatsApp and Facebook messenger, our revamped chatbot comes with a number of new and exciting features.
It allows you to instantly learn more about ONE’s work, stay up-to-date with current campaigns, and find ways to take action in real-time.
Working in both English and French, users can instantly have a wide range conversations with our new chatbot, take our educative quizzes about Africa, learn more about some of the myths surrounding the COVID-19 vaccine, get verified information about COVID-19 vaccines, and more.
