ONE Welcomes Arrival of COVAX Alliance Vaccines in Ghana
Abuja – ONE Campaign celebrates the arrival of the first COVAX alliance vaccines in Africa.
Speaking on behalf of ONE, Edwin Ikhuoria the organisation’s Africa Executive Director, said:
“We welcome the news of Ghana receiving the first COVID-19 vaccines through the COVAX Alliance. The vaccines have arrived at a much needed time when the continent is experiencing a second wave of infections and the added threat of a fast-spreading new variant, which is making it even more difficult to contain the virus. Although the arrival of these vaccines is a great start, many more vaccines will be needed in order to make headway in protecting the most vulnerable people across Africa.
“Last week we released a new analysis showing that richer countries have collectively stockpiled an excess of around 1 billion doses. We urge these countries to move fast and use any excess vaccines they obtain to supercharge the global fight against the virus and ensure that poorer countries also have access to vaccines. It is in our common interest to get the tools needed to beat this virus everywhere – otherwise, there is an increasing risk of new strains emerging that could increase the risk to people everywhere. As we have consistently said, the Pandemic Doesn’t End With A Vaccine. It Ends When Everyone Can Get It.”
