Ground breaking law on rape in Senegal applauded
In response to the recent passing of Senegal’s amended law criminalising rape as a serious crime with a minimum of 10 years and a maximum of life, ONE’s Francophone West Africa Director Ms. Oulie Keita said:
“This is a groundbreaking and historical moment. The new law signals significant progress in the fight against sexual and gender-based violence, and more importantly, offers hope to break down the cultural taboo and stigma in Senegal. But the fight is far from over – the challenge now is to implement this new law and put in place the necessary measures for it to succeed nationally, regionally and locally. ONE will continue to work with the Senegalese government, partners and grassroots groups to ensure all victims have access to justice.”
