Do Agric, It Pays

In 2014 ONE launched the Do Agric, It Pays campaign. It called on African governments to keep their promises to invest in agriculture and support smallholder farmers.

The campaign was launched at the African Union Summit with a speech by Elizabeth, a successful female farmer from Uganda; an appearance from musician D’banj; and a video message from Ivorian football star, Yaya Touré.

Over the course of the campaign, over 2 million Africans rose to the occasion and joined ONE in sending a message to leaders by signing the Do Agric petition. These actions made this the biggest mobilisation in ONE’s history!

What we achieved

  • At the African Union Summit, leaders reaffirmed their intention to commit 10% of their national budgets towards agricultural growth and improvement in their countries.
  • Leaders also promised to double agricultural productivity, halving post-harvest loss, increase youth participation in the agri-business by 30%, and reduce stunting to 10% across Africa.

What we did

  • Featuring 11 different languages, the song encouraged African leaders to invest in agriculture in order to ensure food security, create jobs, and boost economies.
  • We delivered the Do Agric petition signatures and policy recommendations to four heads of state, a vice president, and six ministers of agriculture across 10 countries.
  • We partnered with 19 of Africa’s top recording artists to produce an original song called “Cocoa ‘na Chocolate.”
