South Africa is hosting the football World Cup in 2010; this is hugely exciting, and not just for sports fans. It's a great opportunity for the world to see Africa and the citizens of African nations in a new light. It can help focus the eyes of the world, including the three billion or more who will watch the competition, on Africa and hopefully on the good news that's coming from the continent.
Tens of millions more African children are in school and millions more are being protected from killer diseases because of African leadership in the last few years. Together, in a renewed partnership to boost opportunity and combat poverty across Africa, we can celebrate but then accelerate this tremendous progress. ONE is now teaming up with partner organisations and their World Cup campaigns to ensure that whoever raises the cup in jubilation on July 11 next year, it is the citizens of African nations who will really win.
Our goal is for Africa to beat extreme poverty and achieve the Millennium Development Goals and each of our partners' campaigns is a great contribution towards achieving these visionary goals.
