France Director

ONE is a campaign and advocacy organization backed by two million people from around the world and every walk of life who are committed to the fight against extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa. We aim to hold world leaders to account for the promises made and we press them to support better policies and more effective aid and trade reform. We also work with African leaders to support greater democracy, accountability and transparency.
 
We are looking for a Director to lead our campaigning and advocacy work in France. France is a major priority for ONE in the coming years given the 50th anniversary of the independence of many African countries in 2010 and the French G8 in 2011. The France Director will be crucial in maintaining our engagement and dialogue with key individuals and organisations operating within the French government, civil society, private sector and the media.

The ideal candidate will have significant knowledge of the international development agenda, and experience of lobbying the French government.  The candidate will also possess strategic thinking, analytical, planning, marketing and communications skills; experience of managing people and budgets within a global organisation, and will be a strong collaborator and team player with a deep commitment to ONE’s goals and priorities. Fluent English and French are essential.
 
Reports to: European Director
Location: This role will be based in Paris, with some international travel.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the European Director and the Head of Brussels office, to develop and implement ONE’s French government relations strategy
  • Develop relationships with and represent ONE to senior French government officials and politicians
  • Working closely with ONE’s Senior Director, Global Campaigns to leverage ONE’s campaign assets to build the ONE brand and ONE membership in France.
  • Build a network of key contacts in the French NGO, corporate, academic and media sectors  who are supportive of our organizational objectives
  • Work closely with the Media Director, Europe to develop an effective communications strategy for ONE in France
  • Develop relationships with and represent ONE to key media and communications organisations
  • Recruit and mange a small team and manage a budget


Skills and competence required for the role (candidates should demonstrate how their experience meets these in their application):

  • Substantial experience of working in a senior level position within international development, civil society, media or government
  • Significant understanding of development issues affecting Africa
  • Proven track record of designing and successfully implementing effective lobbying and communications strategies in France
  • Ability to work effectively and sensitively with a wide range of partners
  • Outstanding analytical, interpersonal, and written and oral communication skills
  • Great PR and marketing skills and instincts
  • Highly proficient at establishing strong partnerships across organizations and influencing stakeholders to achieve optimal outcomes
  • A commitment to ONE’s policy priorities and a clear understanding of the links between policy, lobbying, campaigning and media work and of how policy change can be achieved through effective advocacy
  • The gravitas and judgment to represent ONE at high level meetings and conferences
  • Ability to manage competing priorities in a rapidly changing environment
  • Proven interpersonal skills and a strong sense of teamwork and collaboration
  • Experience of managing people and team work performance
  • Fluent in spoken and written French and English.
