Charlotte Hagan Aug Recess

Recently, ONE Congressional District Leader Jacqueline Thurman and I met with Sen. Kay Hagan’s, (D-N.C.), regional liaison, Carrie Cook, in Charlotte, N.C. We actually got to meet Kay just a few weeks ago in Monroe at a “Conversations with Kay” event, but now that it’s August recess, we decided to swing by her office and meet up with her staff.

It was a brief meeting, but a lot was discussed. First, we thanked her for cosponsoring the Foreign Assistance Revitalization and Accountability Act, and then asked for Kay’s support for the Global Food Security Act. This Act would help Africa’s poor farmers fight hunger and achieve a self-sustaining future by helping them get the tools they need to feed themselves and their communities.

Jacqueline told Carrie that ONE is a global campaigning organization that seeks to end extreme poverty and fight preventable disease. We also told her that we both participated in the Charlotte AIDS Walk and signed up more than 200 new members, a nice addition to more than 30,000 other North Carolina ONE members.

Carrie made note of this as I shared with her some information about the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunizations (GAVI). Since GAVI was established in 2000, 256.7 million children have been immunized against a variety of preventable diseases in the world’s poorest countries. By the end of 2010, that number is projected to increase to over 300 million children with funding support. I think it’s safe to say that Carrie was well-informed about ONE’s objectives by the end of our meeting.
