5 weeks for freedom
Check out this post about the 5 Weeks for Freedom campaign from our friends at human rights organization International Justice Mission (IJM). IJM seeks to make public justice systems work for the global poor–children, women and men–who are victims of abuse and oppression and urgently need the protection of the law.
Let me tell you about some ordinary people doing an extraordinary thing.
15 people-engineers, baristas, grandparents, teenagers, teachers-wanted to give a voice to victims of modern-day slavery and other forms of injustice. So, this team of 15 committed to giving up 5 weeks of their lives to cycle 1800 miles of the Underground Railroad-a route that reminds us that slavery has been stopped once, and that together, we can stop it again. This time for good.
5 Weeks for Freedom-a major awareness and advocacy campaign-will help IJM clients like Stephen in Kenya, who was illegally imprisoned and tortured for four years. Or Manna in India, who was 14 when she was held in a brothel for two years.
So what can you do to be a part of 5 Weeks for Freedom, which kicks-off in Mobile, Alabama on June 26 and ends in Buffalo, New York on July 30?
- Move to Action: Whether you have 5 minutes or a few hours – there is a role for everyone in the fight against slavery and oppression. Follow the tour online and get involved at www.5WeeksforFreedom.org.
- Raise Awareness: Educate others about the violent oppression – slavery, sex trafficking and other crimes – the global poor face every day.
For those of us who want to do or be something extraordinary, it’s not too late. 5 Weeks for Freedom reminded me that there is still time – and need – to be a hero. Let’s make history in our own time.
