Biden-Lugar Amendment Passes!

Over the last two weeks, ONE members fought back against cuts to the 2009 international affairs budget. At 1 a.m. today, we not only stopped those cuts cold, we helped secure a $3.1 billion increase!

The final vote was 73-23 in our favor!

You can check out the ayes and nays below and follow the legislation's history on the ONE Blog.

As background to this astounding victory, in early February President Bush requested a $3.1 billion increase to the international affairs budget, but the Senate Budget Committee cut this budget by $4.1 billion. If passed, the 2009 international affairs budget would have been a billion dollars below 2008 levels and we would have lost billions in critical poverty-fighting programs.

For two weeks, ONE members from every state in the country made thousands of calls and sent more than 75,000 petitions urging their senators to restore this money.

And at 1 a.m. today, ONE members - working with important allies such as Interaction, the US Global Leadership Campaign, and champions on the Hill - quite literally saved billions of dollars, and most likely, millions of lives.
